In our most recent webinar, Stuart spoke to James Kay, Director of Resource Efficiency Wales and Lisa Jones, Team Leader Waste Compliance & Development at Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. First, Stuart recognised the world-beating success of Welsh local authority recycling – four Welsh authorities have already reached the 70% target, and all Welsh authorities together met the 2019/20 target of 64%.
But how much of this success has been due to ‘consistency of collections’ and how much have other factors played a part, such as: a national strategy & mandatory recycling targets to meet zero waste by 2050, strong measures to reduce residual capacity, a funded residual & food waste treatment infrastructure, and a commitment to education and enforcement. It’s a good one!
